Lives and works in Brussels
Vincent Vandaele mainly works as a sculptor, making use of wood, construction materials and a range of objects that we might consider common or even abundant in our everyday lives.
Vandaele's oeuvre consists of sculptures, drawings, installations, video, sculpture aspart of installation, multiples and compositions of found objects and ready mades.
The work questions the function and context of a given object, resulting in a play that can redefine some of the many things that surround us.
As an example, this can lead to the new given context of an actual door frame, used in the artists atelier - which is then shown as a sculpture at an exhibition. This same door frame however is later shown ‘again’ as a drying rack for kitchen towels - altering its function, just by slightly changing the angle and the placement of the object. Similar are the bar chairs lent from a Portugese café turning in to a sculpture, but then being chosen to serve as the props for a performance in a white cube.
These elements, ranging from chairs, doors, different sorts of furniture and architectural details to things seemingly unimportant or unworthy - such as coffee cups, an apple placed next to an ash tray, deciding to live in underground service tunnels for a while or even gluing rice crackers on to different surfaces to create faces that look at you angrily - are all equally important in the thoughts behind Vandaele’s work.
Work which might be described with some difficulty as a sort of strange feeling of orderly disorder, placed in front of the spectator.
